My partner moved in – yippee!!! Among all the lovely parts of building our little nest together, I had the joy of reorganising the bookshelves. Kit, as a graphic designer, has a fair collection of big, beautiful art books, some graphic novels and a variety of non-fiction to add to our collection. In order to re-categorise and fit everything in, I had to take everything off of the shelves and lay them into category piles on the floor. Then I sorted them into alphabetical order by author surname.

After first building them a couple of years ago, I have gained quite a few books (shocker) and felt like my categories were getting a bit messy. This was a great opportunity to simplify the shelves and make it feel a bit more functional for me. In these before and after pics, you can see how I combined a few categories together and left the shelves split by format rather than theme.

Some of my favourite things about the new layout:
- I quite enjoy having a whole wee side for my unread books separate from all the ones we have read.
- I did still keep theming categories a wee bit in the non-fiction section because that felt right.
Our non-fic categories take you on a journey from women to LGBTQ+, autism, creativity, art and design, race, food, memoirs, self-help, sport, language, movies, theatre and business. - I think that a full long shelf of Kit’s coffee table art books is such a flex – they’re so cool!
- It was really fun trying to figure out together where all our little decorative trinkets should go
- We fit it all in!! And have space to spare!!
Ain’t she pretty!
