My Scottish island mission continues! It’s been a bit slower this year but happy that I managed to get to one new one this year, at least. I went up to visit my lovely longest friend Erin in Inverness and we decided to take a road trip over to Skye.
The drive over was beautiful, especially with the mist hanging over the trees. Along the way, we stopped off to see Eilean Donan castle which was so gorgeous but laden with tourists. Then just after the Skye bridge, we took a pit stop at the lovely Lean To Coffee for some fuel. Lean To has an outdoor seating area in a ruined croft which was such a cool place to enjoy a cup of tea, an oat chai latte and the best gooey cookie.

Our main goal for the day was to hike up to the Old Man of Storr which was such a lovely walk. It was so eerie to be walking through the mist, not even being able to see where the path ahead was leading us. But totally surreal when we climbed high enough to come out the other side of the fog, stepping into glorious sunshine. It felt like being in heaven, standing above the clouds, higher up than the tips of other mountains in the distance and stealing a bonus bit of summer. It may be the main tourist activity on Skye but it totally makes sense why and the weather really put on a show for us. We took the flatter route on the left hand side and all in all it took us just over 2 hours including our time chilling at the top taking in the views.

After hiking in the heat for a few hours we were feeling ready for sustenance and headed to the Caledonian café in Portree to get a late lunch which hit the spot before taking another drive up around the north of the island through the Quiraing via Uig. I had hoped to take a wild swim at one of the beaches but the fog had descended too low by that point so we headed back to Inverness.

I will definitely need to go back to Skye another time as there’s so much more of the island to see but this day was such a good taster.
